NICK i SCHAEFFER Pc]. Adv. Spin.red and Pd. for by Nick Schae fer ' II ' 1 Know how to call your fire Don'l a place 1o slad! I jackets should be considered a clos~ "'buddy" whenever you're .i~ear the water. Water skiing, swimming or just skimming over the waves in your 0ut- board. This is what I'd call a ~al family vacation. Away from the auto. mobile horns and traffic jams of" the big city. Sleeping under a roof of midnight-blue skies ~prinkled with a lietle glitter. Nights like these and days of so many thrills are not had in the city of 600,000 in which I live. Last year, Jean, my wife, and our two boys, Johnny, eight years old, and Billy, five, and myself had a wonderful vacation at a nearby lake. We had a barrel of fun and more important l !earned a lot about my family things I never knew before. For instance, I thought it was about time that our eight-year-old Johnny learn to water ski. My wife was a 5ttle hesitant and perturbed about the idea because she thought Johnny was still "too young." As usual she won the argument . until the boys and I managed to escape her vigilant eye. We hurried to the pier where there was a pair of water skis awaiting our arrival. Next to the skis were a few life belts the new lightweight kind that all of the "waterbugs" in the area wore. After slipping a belt on the five year old I began putting one on Johnny. He began hollering with the "caw" of an old crow limping along on its last feather. "I don't wonna wear a 'sissy jacket.' The 'big trays' don't wear 'emI" he said as he managed a snii~e between tears. The Eviarude Boating Foundation advmes that all youngsters, and adults alike, wear life belts or jackets when water skiing or taking part in any water activity. Youngsters want to do what mother and dad do and want to wear what they wear. If you wear a life belt your children will be es- pecially careful not to go near the water without wearing Some sort of 1 life preserver becan~e you have taught them, through example, that it is a necessary piece of equipment. Well, as the saying ~o~, "for once m her life my wife wM right" again. Johnny wan "too young." t Happy boating end fishing, too.
