THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 1960 THE BILLINGS COUNTY PIO? EER. MEDORA. N. DAK I I II I THE HUMAN'S ROLE IN WHELPING By Dr. E. M. Glld~v Director, Frlskles Rest~h Kml~lS If your female doff~about to present you with your family of puppies, you !should know what your role~ ~ the in- terested human should be. A week ahead of the whelp- |ng date place a clean box large enough ~or her to stretch J eut in, with newspaper cover- tng the bottom, in a warm, se- cluded spot. If possible, as the whelping day approaches, con- fine the mother to the area. She may ignore the box until the time for whelping nears, when she will usually tear up the paper In making a nest. When whelping begins, stand by--but unobtrusively---in case you can be of some help. The normal delivery time is five to six hours. For each puppy born there is one placental membrane to be accounted for. These mem- branes normally follow each puppy at birth and if not picked up will be eaten by the mother. Occasionally the placenta may be retained in the uterus and if not passed reasonably soon may cause serious trouble for the mother and her young. Pro- longed labor, particularly when associated with a vaginal dis- charge, calls for professional help. If a puppy appears to be stuck and the mother is strain- ing, use a clean dry towel To grasp it and gently pull the puppy as the mother labors. When all the excitement is over, clean the mother with a warm, mild-soap solution and dry her off, Replace her bed- ding with clean, dry newspaper and give her a little warm milk to drink Refrain from feeding: her solids for three to four hours. Feeding Tip: The mother dog needs about twice the amount of nourishing food that she normally eats. To make certain your dog is getting all the "nutrients and vitamins she needs for both he-self and her brood, it is advisable to feed her a top.quality prepared dog food such as griskies, (KNOW YOUR NOW /N A LE C.AN CARl.
